Keep it Simple
In the past we have mentioned many times that the markets should not dictate one’s life. Considering risk tolerance, we keep it simple with most strategies. If something is going to keep you up at night, then it’s probably not the best fit. No matter how simple these thoughts are, it has nothing and everything to do with the recent chatter we have been experiencing.
We have had the usual and not so usual questions come up during casual conversations with clients, business associates and friends.
“Should I come out of equities now?”
“Don’t you think with all the political turmoil the stock market will do poorly”?
“What are other people doing”?
“All my friends seem to be making so much money with stocks”.
While it’s true that the equity markets had monumental returns since the lows of 2009, the inherent risks that is associated with investing were ubiquitous. And today as well as going forward, nothing changes. We know that there is risk in every market, equities and fixed income alike. There is risk in being over weighted in asset classes and/or sectors. Of course, there is the risk of not being invested as well. Recently we gave a presentation of our Project SAFE (Seniors Against Financial Exploitation) and a senior citizen who was in the audience was telling us how she sold all her stocks and took large capital gains due to fear of the political environment and wanted to know if she should buy everything back.
We have countless stories and anecdotes about how emotions guided investment decisions. Unfortunately, most of these stories don’t have favorable out comes. Risking sounding like the proverbial broken record (for those of us who remember LP’s and 45’s), having a balanced portfolio that is built to reach your goals is paramount. Humbly, the goal should be results, not performance. So, going full circle and keeping it simple, why take unnecessary risk?
